The vague nature of this photo matches the feel of the moment, around midnight on 31 December, 1989/1990 at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin. The wall had been breached on 9 November and the next six or seven weeks led up to this huge celebration. The Wall is still there and those are people standing on it in the distance, in this view from the West toward the East. Champagne, sparklers, fireworks, an American flag – this is one of only two remaining photos I have from a completely thrilling day for a young American.
